Grand Army Plaza is the heart that links the many flows of Brooklyn; the Borough's epicenter of traffic, civic institutions, recreation and nature. Through years of change, transforming from promontory to plaza, this heart of Brooklyn has become broken; sometimes congested, other times barren hardscape, but always disconnected by swaths of pavement.
Increased attention to traffic flow has weakened the connections that once linked adjacent neighborhoods with Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the lungs of Brooklyn. Additionally, through repeated concessions to traffic, the plaza itself is no longer a vibrant public space.
As the neighborhoods surrounding the plaza revitalize, and people seek connections to and through the plaza, it is time to reconnect and resuscitate this vital heart of Brooklyn. This proposal breathes life into Grand Army Plaza by uniting the plaza and the park, activating the interior of the plaza and connecting the lungs of the Borough with adjacent neighborhoods and public transportation.
