Mutual Redevelopment Houses
New York, New York

Working closely with the Co-op board and owners of the Mutual Redevelopment Houses, a beautiful courtyard renovation was created. An underutilized space was transformed into a new recreation area to accommodate a variety of activities, including new youth basketball courts and serene plantings to create a quiet respite from the busy Chelsea neighborhood streets.

The design process included multiple design workshops with owners and Co-op board members to ensure that the final design met the needs of the residents. It was critical to include new design elements to help soften the coldness of the asphalt play areas. These elements include new lightposts, concrete and wood benches, a water fountain, new signage, and large swaths of grass-like plantings that will hold their form throughout the seasons.
