Brooklyn Greenway Stormwater Study: Brooklyn, New York

One of the goals of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway is to establish a healthy green edge to Brooklyn, including the integration of sustainable stormwater management. A successful stormwater management plan includes methods for detention and cleansing, as well as methods for controlling the movement of water from one location to another. Although relatively narrow, landscaping along the Greenway can be designed to address stormwater generated within its borders. The Greenway also threads along and through a variety of neighborhoods and land uses, providing an effective means for moving water and an opportunity to detain and cleanse water within the adjacent properties.

WE Design was commissioned by the Regional Plan Association to develop sustainable stormwater management plan for West Street, providing a framework for the upcoming NYC DOT Master Plan for the Greenway as well as other open space planning and design work now taking place along the Brooklyn waterfront, articulating how techniques such as detention ponds, wetlands, and rain gardens can provide ecological, infrastructural, and aesthetic improvements for our city. The West Street Plan will be completed by November 2009.
